French Angelfish

This marine aquarium fish is known as French Angelfish and the correct latin name is Pomacanthus paru. It belongs to the Angelfish family. (e) It's origin is Western Atlantic. (e)

Character and suggestions regarding care

A semi-aggressive species.

French Angelfish can grow up to 35 cm what is approximately 13 inches. So 1 specimen requires at least 4200cm2 of water surface which is approximately 651 square inch. We recommend you to keep it in fish tanks which are large. (e) Medium aquariums have at least 113 Litres (30 US Gallons). Large aquariums have at least 265 Litres (70 US Gallons). Capacity of very large aquariums is at least 700 Litres (185 US Gallons).

It is not very difficult to keep the French Angelfish. (e) The specific gravity (SG) should be between 1,020 and 1,025, the temperature between 23°C (73.4°F) and 26°C (78.8°F). The suggested level of pH (a measure of the acidity/basicity) is between 8.0 and 8.3 which is usual for most marine fish.

This fish grows very fast, so you should get a large tank from the beginning. The aquarium should fit to the size of the fish. There should be as much space as possible between the caves and rocks, as this Angelfish needs space for swimming around them. They usually swim in pairs in nature, but in aquariums they are territorial and I’m not sure if it is a good idea to have more of them in one tank. But if you really want to have two of them, they should be together from the juvenile age and they should have a lot of place.

As juveniles they feed on parasites from other bigger fish; they are cleaning fish. This Angelfish feeds on sponges, algae - in tank dried algae, bryozoans, zoantharians, chopped clams, gorgonians, tunicates and vegetables and wide variety of live and frozen food.
