Longhorn Cowfish

This species is known as Longhorn Cowfish and the correct latin name is Lactoria cornuta. The family that this marine fish species belongs to is called the Boxfish family. (e) Origin of this species is Indo-Pacific. (e)

Character and suggestions regarding care

This fish is peaceful, however it should not be kept with very small species.

Longhorn Cowfish can grow up to 45 cm what is approximately 17 inches. 1 specimen basically needs at least 5400cm2 of water surface which is approximately 837 square inch. This species will require to be kept in a tank that is large. (e) Medium aquariums have at least 113 Litres (30 US Gallons). Large aquariums have at least 265 Litres (70 US Gallons). Very large aquariums hold at least 700 Litres (185 US Gallons).

It is difficult to keep the Longhorn Cowfish. (e) The specific gravity (SG) should be between 1,020 and 1,025, the temperature between 23°C (73.4°F) and 26°C (78.8°F). The pH level should be stable, varying between 8.0 and 8.3 which is usual for marine fish.

This fish might be dangerous for all fish in the tank. If it is stressed, it may release a toxic substance, which can kill other fish and creatures in the tank if you do not change the water quickly.

L. Cornuta should be not kept with aggressive and quick swimming fish or other Cowfish.

Longhorn Cowfish is an omnivore and it can be fed worms, clams, tunicates, various mussels, snails, shrimp and algae. It will accept these food in live or frozen form.
